I den nya rapport med titeln 2009 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices som USA:s utrikesdepartement härom dagen publicerade står det bland annat följande:
In several countries with generally strong records of respecting human rights, there were nevertheless some notable examples of members of vulnerable groups facing discrimination and harassment. Discrimination against Muslims in Europe has been an increasing concern. A recent case that received international attention was the passage on November 29 in Switzerland of a constitutional amendment banning the construction of minarets.
Det är uppenbart att man på många håll i USA – även bland konservativa politiker och opinionsbildare – med oro ser på den växande islamofobin i Europa. Kända neokonservativa debattörer som Charles Krauthammer och Bill Kristol har t ex tagit klart avstånd från den holländske politikern Geert Wilders och hans antimuslimska hatförkunnelse. Krauthammer var medveten om den holländska bakgrunden för Wilders agerande men var ändå klar i sin bedömning:
What he says is extreme, radical, and wrong. He basically is arguing that Islam is the same as Islamism. Islamism is an ideology of a small minority which holds that the essence of Islam is jihad, conquest, forcing people into accepting a certain very narrow interpretation [of Islam].
The untruth of that is obvious. If you look at the United States, the overwhelming majority of Muslims in the U.S. are not Islamists. So, it’s simply incorrect. Now, in Europe, there is probably a slightly larger minority but, nonetheless, the overwhelming majority are not.
Även en känd islamistkritiker som Daniel Pipes tillhör dem som inte vill se alla muslimer dragna över en kam. I en debatt i Kanada den 3 mars med den antimuslimska aktivisten Wafa Sultan (författare till boken A God who Hates) påpekade han följande:
Islam is not the enemy, terrorism is not the enemy, but a form of Islam – radical Islam, fundamental Islam, political Islam, totalitarian Islam, Islamism – [that] has its roots in the religion of Islam but is a particularly severe reading of it…
It’s incumbent upon us to help the moderates, those who want to integrate, who want to be patriotic citizens, who want to live under our system, our beliefs and customs, rather than according to the Shari’a…. We need to encourage them, we need to fund them. We need to help them, not the Islamists.
Wafa Sultan – Vem hatar vad?
Wafa Sultan (vars bok i stort sett ignorerats av seriösa medier i USA) har som sin framgångsrika affärsidé att demonisera islam som religion och hon höll förstås inte med utan påstod att kristna och judar redan från början utpekats av Muhammed som motståndare:
Mohammed was a Jew-hater. Mohammed made Jews and Christians dhimmis. Mohammed’s last words, at his deathbed, were to curse the Jews and the Christians….
“Many in the West argue that these accounts should be viewed in the context of history, that life then was cruel and that the Bible is also rooted in violent stories…. While other religions have had their share of violent history, theirs are merely history stories that happened in the past.
På detta replikerade Pipes med det faktum som en ”islamexpert” borde känna till, nämligen att judar historiskt sökt sig till muslimska länder när de förföljts av västerlandets kristna: “Remember, for over 1,000 years, whenever Jews needed a place for sanctuary, they got it in Muslim lands … The problem is not Islam, it is Islamism”.
Genom sitt fullständiga vanställande av historiska och religionshistoriska fakta har Wafa Sultan inte oväntat varit inbjuden till Danmark och Trykkefrihedsselskabet. Hon har nämligen samma utgångspunkt som dess numera diskrediterade ordförande Lars Hedegaard, att det är själva islam och inte islamismen som är problemet. I Köpenhamn och bland svenska avgrundsbloggare går hon kanske hem. Men i USA är alla inte lika förtjusta.
Den amerikanske rabbinen Stephen Julius Stein besökte för några år sedan ett möte med Wafa Sultan som huvudtalare och blev mycket illa berörd enligt vad han efteråt berättade i en artikel för Los Angeles Times:
This provocative voice said something odd: ”Only Arab Muslims can read the Koran properly because you have to speak Arabic to know what it means — you cannot translate it.” Any translation is, by definition, interpretation, and Arabic is no more difficult to accurately translate than Hebrew. In fact, the Hebrew of the Bible poses many more formidable translation problems than Arabic. Are Christians and Jews who cannot read it ill-equipped to live by its meanings?
Another surprising remark soon followed: ”All Muslim women — even American ones, though they won’t admit it — are living in a state of domination.” Do they include my friend Nagwa Eletreby, a Boeing engineer and expert on cockpit controls, who did not seek her husband’s permission to help me dress the Torah scroll? Or how about my friend Azima Abdel-Aziz, a New York University graduate who traveled to Israel with 15 Jews and 14 other Muslims — and left her husband at home?
There is no subjugation in the homes of these and other American Muslim women I know. They are equal, fully contributing members of their families.
Men för den som blivit besatt att sin idé om att det är islam och inte islamismen som är problemet är förstås fakta inte så viktiga. Rabbi Stein undrade hur det skulle se ut om man vände på perspektivet:
As I experienced the fervor sparked by Sultan’s anti-Muslim tirade and stoked by a roomful of apparently unsuspecting Jews, I thought: What if down the street there was a roomful of Muslims listening to a self-loathing Jew, cheering her on as she spoke of the evils inherent in the Torah, in which it is commanded that a child must be stoned to death if he insults his parents, in which Israelites are ordered by God to conquer cities and, in so doing, to kill all women and children — and this imagined Jew completely ignored all of what Judaism teaches afterward?
Sen lämnade han rummet. För den som har humanism och kritiskt tänkande som utgångspunkt är avståndstagande naturligtvis det enda rimliga förhållningssättet till ”religionshistoriker” av Sultans typ.
